Robert Van Gulik: The Chinese Gold Murders: A Judge Dee Detective Story (Judge Dee Mysteries)
What a difference a year makes. The babies are bigger. My husband has a different job. We live in a different state! And, in photography, I've found something that I truly love to do.
So what are my resolutions for this year? I have been going over this quite a bit. I know that I want to loose weight, but making a resolution like "lose 25 lbs" seems somehow destined to failure. I want to be more content and at peace, and yet just saying that's what I should do won't help me to accomplish that.
So, here's what I came up with for my resolutions.
1. Be kind to myself.
2. Eat five servings of vegetables and fruits a day.
3. Exercise 15 minutes a day.
These seem doable, and also seem guaranteed to make my life better. Friuduric wrote that she didn't stick to her resolutions because she didn't tell anyone what they were, and therefore she wasn't accountable for them. That made sense to me; I can't even remember what my resolutions were from last year. So, here they are, I'm putting them out there. Hold me accountable, people!
I had all these big plans for seeing and doing different things when my in-laws came to visit. I thought that we could go to UT and walk around, go to the capital, go to San Antonio, and so on.
It turns out that the only sightseeing that we did was to come to the capital. It seemed to take all of our energy and focus just to do our normal day; playing with and caring for the babies (what the grandparents really came for), and unpacking a box or two.
My husband read that the star that you see there in the center of the dome is actually eight feet wide, yet so far away that it looks tiny.
There is great pride in Texas that the state capital building here is supposedly taller than the US Capital building in DC.
I got myself to the Austin Public Library to try and find some books on interior design. We need some help figuring out how best to arrange our furniture in this new house.
I love the library. This is a really nice one; much nicer than the main library in Oakland. I plan to spend time here, when I can.
Also got myself a few books to read, including Monstrous Regiment, by Terry Pratchett.
This is the dining/family room in our new house. This is our stuff. So much stuff! Who knew? It didn't feel like so much when we were in our other house, and everything was tucked away in various closets, cabinets, and drawers. Right now I'm wondering why we didn't just toss a burning match in the truck.
Okay, okay, I guess it's not that bad (???), and we'll sort through everything by... well, at least by next year!
Today is the day that we moved into our house. Yay! No more lugging babies and stroller up two flights of stairs! No more crappy apartment! We get to rediscover our stuff!
The movers showed up around 9am to dismantle the babies cribs and take them over to the house, along with all of our stuff that had been in storage. We left the babies in the capable hands of our baby-sitter, and met them at the house, where I had probably one of the longest days of just continuous work. It was box after box, and we tried to unpack as much as we could since we had a full eight hours without the babies.
Thirteen hours later, we called it quits. We got all of the kitchen unpacked, as well as much of our clothes. We had stacks and stacks of paper that they used to pack our stuff (and despite all the paper, we still had damage). I think that a forest is probably smaller due to our move. Hopefully, it was recycled.
So we are here -- still with boxes everywhere, but it's getting a little better, a bit at a time.
The cat is really happy -- she acts like nothing happened!
